Hard rolled, matte black narrow leaves with tops that are slightly lighter. Hongmei (红梅) means (red) plum, as the tea has a tart plum scent. By comparison, the flavor is somewhere between Keemun and Ceylon, and is quite different from assam and Yunnan. During the social unrest of the 19th century, it is said that a number of tea masters fled from Fujian province to the Hangzhou area. They took their manufacturing traditions with them, but were given a new raw material to work with. As the new tea leaves - the same ones used to make Long Jing - were too small to make oolong, black tea was made instead. These varieties could be named after the tea maker's place of origin, like Jiuqu (九曲), which is the "Nine Bend River" in the Wuyi Mountains. In the years since its first production, this tea has appeared a few times, most recently in a short story in the 1990s. Perhaps now the time is ripe for it to meet a wider audience.
