In Chinese mythology, the phases of the moon depend on fragrant osmanthus trees that grow there, obscuring the light. A certain Wu Gang, who out of laziness or rudeness has taken the punishment of the gods upon himself, is doomed to cut them. The light comes back, and then they start growing again ...
In Chinese, 刚 伐 桂 (Wu Gang fa gui) is an expression, meaning Wu Gang cuts osmanthus. In slightly different variants, the story is about Wu Gang who is doomed to cut osmath houses on the moon (!) - which explains the full moon - after which it grows again. So it is the Chinese equivalent of the Sysifos myth, the poor man who rolls a stone up the mountain, only to see it roll down again.
Osmanthus, also called fragrant bush, is associated with the Chinese harvest festival. There are many dishes, cakes and spirits flavored with osmanthus. And of course tea! Here a stronger oolong made on younger leaves. Slightly floral scent.
