Description / Da Hong Pao

The most mythical oolong tea is probably Da Hong Pao (大红袍 which translates to "Big Red Robe" in English). It is said that a Ming emperor's wife became healthy by drinking the tea from some special tea bushes. Later, the emperor ordered the bushes to be protected from frost by covering them with red cloth.
Tea from the original plants, which date back to the Song dynasty, is reserved for state visits and the like. But cuttings that have been taken (and are thus genetically identical) have been propagated and through these, tea is grown for a wider audience.
