This is a pure fruit tea.
Pineapple is sometimes called the "king of fruits". It probably originated in Brazil, but spread to other parts of South America and the Caribbean. The word nanascomes from the South American language Tupi, and roughly means 'excellent fruit'. As it was difficult to grow in Europe, it became a real status symbol. (Also, sadly, a symbol of slavery.) To this day, the top of the Wimbeldon trophy, for example, features a pineapple.
So pineapples were very expensive in the 18th century. If you still wanted to adorn the table with an expensive item, or just walk around with it, you could rent(!) a pineapple for the evening.
